Apple Inc. - Senior UX Design Lead 2011-2015

Cupertino, CA

Summary:

Senior UX Design Lead for design team that developed internal enterprise software for Apple Inc. I led a number of projects that are implemented internally within the company. I did some of my best work here, and overall it was an amazing and rewarding experience. I also have a deep respect for Apple's confidentiality policy, so as much as I would like to, I will not share examples of this work publicly or privately.

What I can share are some generalities. I led design teams of a wide range of apps, from data intensive, enterprise-level applications to converting former desktop applications to the iPhone and iPad platforms. I led the product ideation and all UX of a major, brand-new application from the onset of the project to its completion.

From a process perspective, I can also share I used my Keynote skills to rapidly prototype credible UX flow screens in order to quickly gain consensus on a design idea. I also incorporated Apple Numbers and Apple Motion to create assets within the Keynote presentation which were beyond the scope of its native feature set.

Additional Details:

Apple has developed its own internal software for many years, and for many reasons, with security and design control being primary. As the number of applications grew, and as the need to expand the software onto the iOS platform, our group was created to update the UX and design for the legacy, as well as new, applications. My manager, also an IDEO alum, noted my experience in creating very rapid prototypes that can accelerate consensus on the design strategy or feature being addressed, and asked me to help the team create a new design process to use with the stakeholder business units.

The applications we made were only used by Apple employees, and best described as enterprise-level. Imagine the rigors of the Apple consumer UX applied to far more complex enterprise applications, working with far greater datasets and with maximum attention to security and privacy. As a designer, I loved this challenge.

Since we were a central part of the interior workings of Apple, I worked on applications with business units such as Finance, Data and Server Management, Human Resources, Retail, Public Relations, Marketing, iTunes Store, Customer Support, and many others. I also had the opportunity to develop a major, brand new application from the project’s inception all the way to internal deployment. In addition to the usual product architecture and UX tasks, I also spearheaded the idea behind the application’s overall model, coming from my understanding of Apple’s culture and how that difference could manifest itself in the way the app was designed and how the data was used.
